alex wilkerson

Howdy.

My name is Alex Wilkerson.

I live in Berlin and teach English and Social Studies at a high school in Potsdam, Germany on a Fulbright scholarship. I am a proud British-American who recently finished a BA in German Studies & English from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

I spent a good deal of my university career in studies abroad. I've lived and learned in Dresden and in Bonn, and even matriculated myself fully at the University of Bonn in the 2008/9 school year to intensify my studies of German language, general linguistics, international affairs, creative writing (both in English & German), and philosophy of language.

The deeper I delved into my German studies, the more I realized that Germany is quickly becoming a world-leading & example-setting epicenter of creativity, freedom, economy, future industry, new media, and human ecological practices. I recognized in my studies the rising importance of Germany in future European & Western society, and wanted to familiarize myself with her.

What's next?

I have always been deeply in love with technology and the internet. Ever since the early 2000s when my old neighbor Lloyd (an IT worker for Baldwin Piano Co.) let me have one of the Windows 95 machines he didn't need, I have been interested in technology and deeply connected to the cultural internet. I remember saving up to buy my own MP3 player years before the iPod was released, and learning the basics of HTML and frames in Dreamweaver back when it belonged to Macromedia. Self-professed Netscape & Winamp pro.

Later on at university, I worked for Ohio State's leading tech lab, the Digital Union. I learned to use a plethora of software, ranging from Photoshop for preparing graphics to Final Cut Pro for video editing. I managed a classroom and teleconference space, and helped connect students and professors from India, Brazil, and China to our Columbus campus for videoconferenced lectures. I helped people from all over the US create their digital stories, a melding of audio, video, and other multimedia to create a biographical narrative. Over the years, my interest in new technologies led to my playing with Ubuntu Linux. This allowed me to lead an informative workshop on the OS to Ohio State staff and faculty. My interest and enthusiasm for new & innovative tech and media is insatiable, but I'm just scratching the surface.

My main goal is to combine my knowledge and appreciation of German language, history, and culture with my fascination and obsession with technology, product innovation, communications, and new media.
